Welcome to Norwell

Settled in 1636 as part of Satuit (later Scituate), Norwell sits twenty miles south of Boston along the picturesque North River. Shipbuilding was a major industry of the town during the 1700s and 1800s. Some of the finest sailing vessels in our nation's history were produced in Norwell, including the first ship to circumnavigate the globe, the Columbia. In 1888 the town incorporated as Norwell in recognition of Henry Norwell, a dry goods merchant and summer resident who helped to fund the town's public roads.

Today, Norwell is primarily a residential town, known for its highly-ranked school system and public services. There are a number of recreational areas throughout the town, offering a wide array of outdoor activities. Some of these include Valley Swamp and Stetson Meadows Conservation Land, the Albert F. Norris reservation (pictured to the left), the Black Pond Natural Preserve, the North River Salt Marsh, and the Donovan Property.
